Guttering & Downpipes Explained
Going the extra mile on blockages
Often an overflowing gutter isn't a gutter problem at all: the downpipe is blocked. One customer in GU17 described me unblocking a downpipe "grabbing chunks of muck with his arm down the drain, soaked to the skin in the pouring rain" while fitting new guttering and fixing a loose slate. Finding the real cause is part of the job.
Getting the fall right
Gutters need a slight, consistent slope towards each outlet. Too little and water sits in the gutter; too much at one end and it overflows. On long runs, outlets may be positioned so water doesn't have to travel too far.
Profiles and colours
Domestic guttering comes in a few common profiles, such as half-round and square, in colours including black, white and brown. Where a house is semi-detached or terraced, matching the neighbouring profile keeps the connection neat.
Combined with fascias and soffits
Because gutters are fixed to the fascias, it's often most cost-effective to renew them together. If your fascias are rotten, new gutters won't hold properly, so I check both before quoting.
Looking after your gutters
Once new guttering is fitted, the main job is keeping it clear. Leaves, moss washed off the roof and debris from nearby trees collect at outlets and in downpipes. Checking them after autumn and after heavy storms helps prevent overflows. If you notice water spilling over during rain, it's worth getting it looked at before damp shows inside.
If your gutter problems are coming from the roof itself, such as moss-covered tiles shedding debris or felt at the eaves that no longer drains into the gutter, I'll point it out and explain what can be done, so you're not just treating the symptom.
