What sits under the tiles
Beneath the tiles, battens hold everything in place and a breathable underlay acts as a second line of defence against wind-driven rain. On older roofs the original underlay has often perished or is missing altogether. Renewing these layers is as important as the tiles you see.
The details that matter
Most leaks start at junctions rather than in the middle of a roof slope: ridges, hips, valleys, verges, chimneys and where roofs meet walls. These details are finished carefully during a re-roof, including lead flashing where it's needed.
Doing the related work at the same time
A renewal is the ideal time to replace rotten fascias and soffits, renew guttering, replace tired lead flashing or remove a redundant chimney stack. Doing it together means the roof edge and junctions are all finished as one job.
